Five Things You Need to Know Before You Buy Firewood

Buying firewood isn’t just a case of picking up a bag and hoping for the best. Ensuring you choose the right fuel for your fire will ensure it will burn brighter, warmer, and longer this winter, which is pretty hard to argue with! To help you choose the perfect firewood for your home fire, we’ve put together a list of five things you need to consider before you commit to a purchase. This will ensure your home fire keeps you warm and cosy.

1. Consider what type of wood is best for your fire

Your first task is to work out what type of wood to use in your fire. Our kiln-dried firewood is our best performing option and gets the job done when paired with our Supapak kindling. Alternatively, you might want to go for our heat logs, which are a high-energy, next-generation fuel. Realizing that there are different types of wood that you can use on your fire is the first step towards purchasing the best possible fuel option.

2. Plan for storage

If you decide to buy firewood in bulk to save yourself some money, then you need to make sure you have sufficient space to store it correctly. Your home wood stack should have plenty of space between each of the logs to prevent rotting, and you should create your stack a suitable distance away from your house. It’s no good buying a huge stack of wood and having nowhere to store it safely!

3. Avoid buying green wood

Green wood is recently harvested and is particularly heavy as a result of its high moisture content. The best wood to burn on your home fire is logs that have had sufficient time to dry, as they ignite much better than wood that has been recently harvested. For instance, our kiln-dried logs have been dried to a moisture level of less than 20% making them Ready to Burn certified. This ensures they will burn well and emit less smoke than standard logs.

4. Buy in bulk to save money

If you’re planning to light your home fire all the way through autumn and winter, then buying in bulk as opposed to individual bags will save you money. We have several bulk options available, whether it’s our standard or large crate or our bulk bag. The best value option is our 21 bag large crate, or if you’re looking for a slightly smaller amount, we also offer a standard crate of 11 bags of kiln dried firewood. If you have the space available to store it correctly, then it’s definitely the best option for your fire and will save you money in the long run.

5. Pick up other home fire essentials

When you’re happy with your selection of firewood, there are several other essential items that you need to pick up to ensure your home fire will be roaring this winter. You might, for instance, pair our kiln-dried logs with some kindling and firestarters to make the task of setting your home fire so much easier. We’ve actually put together some awesome bundles that will enable you to get your home fire started in no time at all, and they’re well worth your consideration if you’re hoping to set your home fire with minimal fuss for a little less money.
