Our top tips for using railway sleepers in the garden

Railway sleepers can be a great addition to your garden from both an aesthetic and practical point of view. They are also weather-resistant and durable, making them an excellent landscaping feature for long into the future. To help inspire you, we’ve brought together five ways that you could use railway sleepers in your garden this summer.

Vegetable or plant beds

Railway sleepers can be made into the perfect border for raised vegetable or plant beds. Whether you fancy growing your favourite herbs to add to the kitchen cabinet or even some root vegetables to pad out your homemade signature soup, there’s no better way to separate areas of your garden than with railway sleepers.

Steps and pathways

Oak railway sleepers make for a perfect addition to garden pathways or steps. When separating loose stones or gravel, horizontal sleepers create a stunning garden feature. They allow you to create a cost-effective pathway that provides an alternative to walking on the grass in the wet winter months.

Garden furniture

If you’re a dab hand when it comes to DIY projects, why not make your own garden furniture from railway sleepers? Oak is exceptionally durable and creates a timeless, rustic look. Just grab some cushions from a local garden centre to finish things off, and you will have an outside area that’s perfect for summer get-togethers.

Outdoor decking

Natural garden decking is a cost-effective alternative to a concrete patio and ensures you have a space to host your friends this summer. No matter the size of your available outdoor space, you can create a stunning and easy-to-maintain outdoor decking area with railway sleepers that adds a whole new dimension to your garden. You can then house your BBQ on your outdoor decking, keeping it close to the house and ready for those long summer afternoons spent with family and friends.

Firepit area

If you’re planning to install a fire pit in your back garden, why not use railway sleepers to section the area off? When used as a border, railway sleepers are robust and beautiful, as well as helping you make the most out of the available space in your garden. You can then set a fire pit alight in the centre of your railway-sleeper border, providing a safe and inviting area for your guests to relax.

Remember though - when setting up your fire pit in the back garden, make sure you use the correct fuel. Our kiln-dried firewood is perfect for fire pit use and will ensure you have a roaring fire that burns long and bright throughout the evening. To make things even easier, check out our fire pit bundle that comes with everything you need to get your fire pit up and running this summer.

As you can see, there are so many ways you can use railway sleepers in your garden, and they will add a whole new dimension to its layout and design.
