How to get the most out of your Fire Pit

Cosying up with loved ones in front of an outdoor fire pit is a truly wonderful way to pass the time. But given that fire pits come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, it’s important to understand how best to use yours safely and efficiently. We’ve put together this guide that will help you learn how to use a fire pit and allow you to focus on the important things - like who’s bringing the guitar!

Step 1: Position your fire pit safely

Perhaps the most crucial thing to consider before starting a fire is where to locate your pit. You will need to position your pit far enough away from your home so you aren’t disturbed by smoke, and in a spot that is not too close to overhanging branches, flowers, and even fences. Picking an open area towards the back of the garden is the ideal place to plan for the installation of your fire pit to get things started.

Step 2: Select your kindling and firestarters

One of the most challenging aspects of using a fire pit is igniting the fire. To give yourself the best possible chance, you need to select the right kindling and firestarters, as this will make your life so much easier. Combining our ultra-dry kindling with natural wood wool firestarters will enable you to get your fire started quickly and efficiently.

Unlike a lot of other retailers’ firelighters, our Homefire Twizlers (Wood Wool) Natural Firelighters are 100% natural with no added chemicals. They also have an odourless smell when burning, meaning you aren't left with a horrible smell on your hands once handling like other well-known brands. The next thing you need to ensure is that you’re burning the right fuel, as we explain below.

Step 3: Buy the right fuel

In May 2021, the UK Government introduced a ban on the burning of wet wood and coal at home. As such, you need to make sure you secure a legal fuel source when you come to use your home fire pit, which is where we can help you. Our kiln-dried firewood has a moisture content of less than 20%, ensuring it burns long and true throughout the night.

You can pair it with our popular heat logs, which are made from compressed wood and are 100% chemical and additive-free. Our impressive range of firewood products will enable you to build the perfect fire in your pit at home and ensure the flames burn bright throughout your evening with your friends.

Step 4: Keep your fire under control

You have a responsibility to keep your fire under control once it is lit. Instead of dumping logs on top of the flames as you please, only add to the fire when there is a need, and keep the fire confined within the pit. If you don’t pay attention to the size of your fire, a sudden gust of wind can put your guests in danger and can cause embers to fly in all directions. Be sensible and keep your fire under control.

Step 5: Extinguish the fire safely

When it comes to the end of the night, you will need to extinguish your fire before heading to bed. The best thing to do is to let the flames die right down to embers before extinguishing the fire with water. Alternatively, you can shovel some sand and dirt over the embers, as this will help to put the fire out without the use of water. Whichever method you opt for, just make sure the fire is fully extinguished before you head back into the house.
